Animal Refuge
Over 40 years ago, Bergen Animal Rescue, Inc. (BARI) and Ramapo Animal Refuge, Inc. (RARI) merged to form Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc. (RBARI) to establish a shelter for homeless animals. RBARI faced challenges like finding a suitable town for the shelter. They acquired property, renovated a garage into a shelter with a bequest, and opened a gift shop. RBARI evolved its animal policy to become a "No-Kill" shelter. The shelter overcame property loss due to highway construction through negotiation and relocation.

We focus on providing safe refuge, medical care, and new homes for homeless and abused dogs and cats, especially those in urgent need like seniors and medical cases. RBARI prioritizes animals from local facilities to reduce euthanasia rates and homelessness. They also support the community through animal welfare emergencies, low-cost spay/neuter surgeries, and trap-neuter-release programs to address overpopulation and homelessness issues in animals.
